Dream Cast for Silver Echoes, Part III

Silver Echoes takes us on a wild ride through the Roaring Twenties, from Denver to Chicago and back to Leadville, Colorado, following the tumultuous life of Silver Dollar Tabor and her mother, Baby Doe Tabor. It’s a story bursting with ambition, betrayal, love, and a quest for identity, and as I read it, I couldn’t help but picture which modern movie stars would bring these incredible characters to life on the big screen.

So, grab your popcorn, because here’s Part III of my dream cast for a Silver Echoes movie adaptation, complete with a little fun and flair!

Diamond Jim Colosimo: Al Pacino (in his prime)

Why he’s perfect: Diamond Jim is the larger-than-life “king of the Chicago underworld,” a figure of immense power and dangerous charm. He has a “diamond ring on every finger.” While Al Pacino is older now, his iconic performances as crime bosses in films like The Godfather and Scarface perfectly capture the ruthless authority and theatricality needed for Diamond Jim. In his prime, Pacino’s intensity and ability to dominate a scene would be ideal for this character.

Dante Rossi: Oscar Isaac

Why he’s perfect: Dante Rossi is a smooth operator with “smoky gray sunglasses,” an “angled jaw,” a “cleft chin,” and a “snappy pinstripe suit.” He exudes “bored confidence,” but his “eyes, cold and black as a moonless night, promised danger and deceit.” Oscar Isaac has the magnetism and subtle intensity to play this intriguing, morally ambiguous character. He can be charming and seductive while hinting at a darker, more dangerous side, perfectly capturing Rossi’s manipulative nature and underworld connections.

Tiny Kline: Kristen Schaal

Why she’s perfect: Tiny is a “four-foot-ten dynamo” with a “Southern drawl,” a loyal friend and fellow performer. Kristen Schaal, known for her distinctive voice and comedic timing, would bring both the feisty spirit and the underlying vulnerability to Tiny. She excels at playing characters who are resilient and quirky, perfectly capturing Tiny’s unwavering loyalty and eventual ambition.

Zhang (Peking Club owner): Ken Jeong

Why he’s perfect: Zhang is the “round-faced man” with a “thin Fu Manchu mustache,” who runs the Peking Club. He’s a humorous character who proves to be cunning. Ken Jeong brings a natural comedic energy and a playful yet shrewd demeanor to his roles. He could easily capture Zhang’s witty banter and the subtle power he wields as a club owner in a dangerous city.

Jeffrey Mink (Soldier): Glen Powell

Why he’s perfect: Jeffrey Mink is the charming soldier who captures Echo’s heart, a man of “valiant determination” with “hazel eyes” that reflect his raw desire and underlying fear of war. Glen Powell has that classic movie star charm and a genuine sincerity that would make his brief but impactful romance with Echo truly poignant. He can convey both youthful exuberance and the somber weight of wartime realities.

Madam Theodosia (Spiritualist): Angela Bassett

Why she’s perfect: Madam Theodosia is a mysterious spiritualist and seeress, “swathed in purple and gold”, who offers cryptic but wise counsel. Angela Bassett’s regal presence, powerful voice, and ability to convey deep wisdom and a touch of the mystical would make her an unforgettable Madam Theodosia. She can deliver profound lines with gravitas, making the character both enchanting and trustworthy.

Uncle Last: Nick Offerman

Why he’s perfect: Uncle Last is Lily’s eccentric, ailing father-in-law, a man who has “lost his marbles” but still enjoys a good “Corpse Reviver.” Nick Offerman’s deadpan delivery and ability to play gruff but lovable characters would be perfect for Uncle Last. He could bring both humor and a touch of pathos to the character, making his scenes memorable despite his declining health.

Aunt Tilly: Allison Janney

Why she’s perfect: Aunt Tilly is a woman concerned with appearances and family legacy, who can be both “extravagant” and pragmatic when it comes to financial matters. Allison Janney has a commanding presence and can perfectly embody a high-society aunt who is particular about her family’s standing. Her ability to play strong, complex women who are a mix of intimidating and endearing would be ideal for Aunt Tilly.
